يتناول الكتاب الكلام على البسملة، فكتبت في مقدمة البحث عن أهمية الكتاب وجعلته في قسمين، أحدهما يتناول الدراسة، فتشمل حياة المؤلف، ومقدمة لتحقيق الكتاب، ومنهجي في التحقيق، ووصف نسخ المخطوط. أما القسم الثاني فيتناول النص المحقق، وقد بين المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه أهمية هذا الشرح في جمع ما ذكره السابقون في شرح البسملة والتطرق لأمور لم يقل بها غيره من الشراح. وانحصر كلام المؤلف في ثلاثة مباحث وتنبيه وخاتمة. المبحث الأول تكلم فيه كلمة (أبتر) من قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: كل أمر ذي بال لا يبدأ فيه ببسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، فهو أبتر فبين نوع الاستعارة في كلمة (أبتر) وأقوال العلماء في ذلك، مع التعليق على هذه الأقوال، وترجيح بعضها. وتحدث في المبحث الثاني عن حرف الباء، وهل هي من المشترك اللفظي أم لا؟ وكذلك تحدث عن الاختلاف بين البصريين والكوفيين في نيابة حروف الجر بعضها عن بعض، مبيناً أدلة كل فريق، وتطرق في هذا المبحث إلى قضية استعمال العام في الخاص عند العلماء، وعلاقته بمعاني الباء. وتحدث في المبحث الثالث عن معنى البسملة، وتضمن مسألة المعنى المصدري والحاصل بالمصدر، وعرف كل منهما، وبين الأمور التي تخرج عنهما، وتحدث عن صيغ المصدر في هذين المعنيين، وأقوال العلماء في ذلك، كما نبه إلى بعض الأمور التي تتعلق بهذين المعنيين. وختم الكتاب بأن التكليف بالفعل إنما هو بالمعنى المصدري وليس بالمعنى الحاصل بالمصدر، على خلاف ما هو مشتهر بين العلماء، موضحاً رأيه بالعلل والبراهين.
