|b Humiliation involves discursive power that is suitable to both the humiliator, who has ability to humiliate the individuals by using his power and the victim, who obtains the power against humiliation by rejecting the situation of humiliation. Both the humiliator and the humiliated retain power inside this specific social relationship. However, it seems that humiliation has not been given its due attention from a pragmatic perspective despite its importance. Hence, this work deals with humiliation in selected English novels. Specifically, it is concerned with pragmatic analysis of Lessing’s novel Going Home and Eliot’s novel The Mill on the Floss. Accordingly, the study mainly aims at showing the ways the factors of humiliation, speech act, Grice’s maxims, types, process of humiliation and literary devices are utilized to achieve the pragmatic effects on the three stages of the process, i.e. initiating stage, developing stage and the responding stage. To achieve the aims of the study, it is hypothesized that humiliation is a process of a number of stages. The factors of humiliation racism and position are utilized by the humiliators and considered as prerequisites to humiliate others in both novels. Also, the speech acts of asserting and threatening are the dominant used in the two novels which reflects the characters asserting and threatening to humiliate others. Grice’s maxims are violated by the humiliators of the two novels to convey ideas and messages indirectly. Types, process of humiliation are more employed by the humiliators for the purpose of achieving their goals in humiliating the victim by using some literary devices. Rejection and its strategies are the most common strategy used by the humiliatees to reflect their rejection to the situation of humiliation than acceptance strategies.
