The purpose of the study was to find the frequency of the conjunctions in the essays and to check if they are used correctly or not. It also aimed to analyze the interference of the students L1 on the usage of the English conjunctions. The taxonomy by Halliday and Hasan (1976) was used as the framework of the study and the research was designed with a mini corpus of the written texts collected from 30 post graduate students in three universities in Malaysia. The essays were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to give a clear picture of the usage of conjunctions by Arab speaking post graduate students. The result showed that the students have used some of the conjunctions in an inappropriate way with different percentages in the four categories of additives, adversatives, causals and temporals. The findings shows the tendency of the students to use "and" to link the ideas more than other conjunctions. There were problems also in the L1 interference on some of the conjunctions. The study results refer directly to the neglect of teaching the distinction between conjunctions in the schools and it suggests that some changes are required in the teaching materials for English writing in the Arab countries to EFLstudents.
