Morocco has strengthened its legal arsenal for the protection of the environment with a very important new law, Law No. 49.17 on environmental assessment. This Act replaces the current act on the study of the impact on the environment, No. 12.03, promulgated in 2003, which at the time represented a qualitative step taken by Morocco in the context of its international commitments since the Rio de Janeiro conference in 1992 and its vital engagement in strengthening its legal and institutional mechanisms to address threats to the environment in all its forms. The new law also comes within the framework of the download of the requirements of Act No. 99.12, the national charter for Environment and sustainable development, especially with regard to strengthening environmental governance mechanisms through the revision of the legislative framework on the study of environmental impact. What are the developments of this new law? And to what extent, will be able to overcome the shortcomings slices demonstrated by his current law after more than 17 years of application on the ground?
