تعد شخصية الكميل بن زياد النخعي الكوفي التابعي واحدا من أخلص أصحاب الإمام علي (عليه السلام)، يظهر أنه تمتع بمكانة ومنزلة عظيمة لأنه كان من سادات قومه عاش حياته إلى جانب الإمام علي (عليه السلام) منذ هاجرت قبيلته من اليمن إلى الكوفة وكان من أقرب المقربين إليه ولهذا السبب أصبح واليا مخلصا في عهد الإمام علي (عليه السلام) وهو أيضا من أعضاء الوفد القادم من الكوفة إلى المدينة للاحتجاج على تصرفات والي الكوفة في عهد الخليفة عثمان بن عفان، وبعد مقتل الخليفة عثمان بن عفان بايع الكميل بن زياد أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) وأخلص في البيعة وكان من ثقاته فلازمة وأخذ العلم الغزير والحكمة منه واختصه بدعاء من أهم الأدعية (دعاء كميل) وهي من الأدعية المعروفة والمهمة في التاريخ الإسلامي.
