المستخلص: Various imperative sentences of English and Arabic are put under discussion and analysis according to their occurrence in different situations. Form, structure and semantics of the Arabic imperative are compared with their closest English counterparts. English and Arabic imperatives are equally exposed and studied with their shades of meaning. Graded levels of command which extend from mild request to the strong tone of order are clearly shown and carefully examined. The current study exhibits the similarities and differences between English and Arabic in regard to imperatives. The differences are certainly more difficult to learn than the similarities; but partial similarities are considered most difficult for learners of English.
