Organizational Role Stress Among the Egyptian Banks Employees: A Comparative Study

Due to the liberalization and privatization that started in Egypt in 1991, the banking sector has undergone major reforms, including an increase in the number of private and foreign banks, and a rise in competition. Different products were then introduced, and new services and marketing techniques were developed, resulting in various role requirements and enormous pressure placed among the bank employees. In this context, the researcher has undertaken a study to explore the organizational role stress level at the Egyptian commercial banks as well as identify the coping styles and strategies used by the employees, with a sample of 310 participants. The results of this study reveal that inter-role distance is the most potent role stressor, and that the bankers tend to adapt the avoidance style to cope with stress, particularly the defensive coping strategy. Moreover, the research finds significant differences in the level of stress among bank employees according to the bank ownership, managerial level, and marital status. However, gender does not emerge as a significant differentiator. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings provide guidelines that deepen the understanding and management of organizational stress in the Egyptian banking sector. |
