التعريف والتنكير في اللغة العربية ظاهرة لا تتحدد بما يدل عليه اللفظ في أصل الوضع فحسب، بل لا بد من مراعاة الاستعمال الفعلي للغة (البعد التداولي)؛ إذ تتدخل عوامل خارجة عن اللغة تساعد كل من المتكلم والمخاطب في تعيين الألفاظ وتعريفها، أو إبهامها وتنكيرها. ويحاول هذا البحث تقديم تفسير لظاهرة التعريف والتنكير في اللغة العربية، بالاستناد إلى الآليات التداولية، وهذه الآليات هي كل ما يقع خارج اللغة، كعلم المتكلم والمخاطب، وما يختزنانه من معارف مسبقة لوقت التحدث، وقصد المتكلم، والإشارات الحسية، وحضور ما يحيل إليه الاسم أثناء التكلم، وغير ذلك. ولم نتخذ نظرية تداولية معينة نستند إليها، وإنما كان تحليلنا لهذه الظاهرة قائم على التداولية بمفهومها العام بوصفها اتجاها يقوم على دراسة علاقة العلامات اللغوية بمستعمليها، أو بالأحرى دراسة اللغة في الاستعمال. وقد كان المعين لنا في ذلك آراء النحويين العرب وأقوالهم التي تنسجم مع ما يطرحه الدرس التداولي.
