تعد ظاهرة العنف في الأسرة من أكثر الظواهر الاجتماعية التي دعت الباحثين لإجراء البحوث عن دوافع هذه المشكلة وأسبابها وأضرارها على الفرد وعلى المجتمع. وهي في الواقع ظاهرة قديمة جديدة لا يكاد يخلو منها مجتمع من المجتمعات سواء المتحضرة منها وغير المتحضرة، فهي قديمة قدم الإنسان الذي ارتبط وما يزال بروابط اجتماعية مع الوسط الذي يؤثر فيه ويتأثر به، وأكثر أشكاله هو العنف ضد المرأة وضد الأطفال بأشكال شتى. وقد أصبح ازديادها وانتشارها على مستوى العالم أمرا مزعجا ومثيرا للدهشة في نفس الوقت، خصوصا بعد انتشار الفضائيات والإنترنت، لأن الأسرة هي أساس المجتمع ومصدر قوته التي ينبغي أن تبنى بناءا رصينا قوامه المحبة والوئام والتسامح، وإذا بنا نرى العكس حيث العنف والانفصام في عرى هذه المؤسسة الاجتماعية المقدسة، وبالتالي الضياع والتشرد وما يتبعها من أمور تهدد كيان المجتمع وتنخر في أمنه وسلامته، فصار العنف فيها لا يقل فتكا عن الحروب والأمراض الصحية، لأنه ينخر أساس البناء الاجتماعي، ويهدد سلامته وقوته. ومن هنا تأتي أهمية دعوت الإشارة إلى خطره ووضع الحلول المناسبة لعلاجه أو الحد من تطوره وانتشاره. وهذا البحث محاولة جادة لمعالجة هذه القضية الشائكة والمعقدة التي تهدد البناء الأسري في مجتمعاتنا، والتي صارت تزداد بمرور الأيام رغم التطور الحضاري والتقدم العلمي الذي أحرزه الإنسان اليوم.
