This policy continued even in the government of James Callaghan. Britain's economic recession is characterized by tight fiscal policy and high rates of unemployment, offset by an increase in labor costs, an increase in taxes and a significant depreciation of the pound against other foreign currencies. Which led to strikes and demonstrations against British Labor policy, which led to its loss in the 1979 parliamentary elections and the victory of Conservative Party led by Margaret Thatcher. | ||
