|a عملت منظمة الوحدة الإفريقية-سابقا-على إنشاء نظام إفريقي لحماية حقوق الإنسان والشعوب في القارة الإفريقية، تجسد في تبني الميثاق الإفريقي لحقوق الإنسان والشعوب سنة 1981م، هذا الأخير جاء بآلية من أجل الرقابة والإشراف على إعمال وتعزيز الحقوق والحريات المكفولة بموجب أحكام هذا الميثاق، وهي اللجنة الإفريقية لحقوق الإنسان والشعوب، وأكثر من ذلك طورت المنظمة لاحقا من آليات الحماية وذلك بتبنيه لبروتوكول 1998م الملحق بالميثاق الإفريقي، الذي جاء بالمحكمة الإفريقية لحقوق الإنسان والشعوب، من أجل رقابة أفضل على أعمال الحماية اللازمة لحقوق الإنسان وحرياته الأساسية في القارة الإفريقية.
