يعد الحرف من العناصر الأساسية في تأليف البنية اللغوية مفردة كانت أم جملة وهو العنصر الأصغر في هذا البناء، فكل تركيب يتكون من عدة بنيات مفردة متباينة الحروف والأصوات مرتبطة مع بعضها في سياق خاص، لأداء معنى عام وهذا ما أسماه النحاة "حروف المباني". وأما التي تقوم بأداء معنى وظيفي تنسب إليه كالنفي والإيجاب فاصطلح على تسميتها "حروف المعاني"، وهذا ما نريد الوصول إليه، لأن الحروف التي نحن بصدد الوقوف عليها هي ضرب من حروف المعاني. لقد عني المتقدمون والمتأخرون بدارسة حروف المعاني على اختلاف أنواعها وأقسامها، فالواضح أن حروف المعاني تلعب دورا جوهريا في أداء المعنى الوظيفي، فالذي يؤيد ذلك هو اهتمام النحاة أنفسهم بها ابتداء من الخليل مرورا بسيبويه وبقية من أتي بعدهما. ونجد أن النحاة قد اختلفوا في تقسيم كل منها حسب منهجه، فمنهم من جعل من أنواعها: المختص وهو الذي يختص بأحد القبيلين كالجوازم وحروف الجر، وغير المختص وهو الذي يدخل على القبيلين وبعضهم. "المشترك"، فالحروف المشتركة بعضها يعمل والبعض الأخر لا يعمل، ومنهم من قسمها إلى أحادية وثنائية، معتمدا في ذلك على بنية الحرف ومنهم من ذهب إلى تقسيمها إلى عاملة وغير عاملة والحروف التي نحن بصدد الوقوف عليها غير مختصة عاملة وهذا ما ثبت لي.
