يعد الأبناء زينة الحياة الدنيا، وهبة من الله سبحانه وتعالى للأبوين ووجود ابن في الأسرة يعني الكثير، لذا فإن ولادة الطفل أمر يتشوق له الوالدان ويبنون عليه آمالا وتوقعات وأحلاما، وخصوصا عند الأم فتبدأ بالاستعداد لميلاد طفلها، وتتوقع قدوم طفل سليم ومعافى تقدمه هدية لزوجها وعائلتها، وتحلم بشكله وتخطط لمستقبله. فإنجاب طفل غير عادي قد يصيب الأم بخيبة أمل وإحباط وربما تنسحب الأم من العلاقة التي عملت على بنائها وأسست قواعدها بينها وبين طفلها في مرحلة الحمل حيث إنها لم تبن علاقة وقواعد مع طفل غير عادي أي إنها لم تتوقع أن يولد لها طفل غير طبيعي، مما يكون له الأثر الكبير على الأم. لذا يعد الاهتمام بالجوانب النفسية للأم الهدف الأسمى نحو مستقبل أفضل للأسرة التي تعد المؤسسة التربوية والاجتماعية الأولى المسؤولة عن تنشئة الأبناء، بوصفها الحضن الدافئ، والملاذ الأمن للأطفال والزوج. من خلال أهداف البحث والتي تتضمن التعرف على فاعلية أسلوب المواجهة في تنمية الصلابة لدى أمهات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة عن طريق اختبار الفرضيات، وقد استعمل الباحثين المنهج التجريبي على عينة من أمهات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة والبالغ عددها (٢٠) أم حيث طبق البرنامج الإرشادي المكون من (١٤) جلسة بأسلوب المواجهة على (١٠) من الأمهات كمجموعة تجريبية وبعد استعمال الوسائل واستخلاص النتائج توصل إلى فاعلية البرنامج الإرشادي في تنمية الصلابة النفسية لدى أمهات ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة.
