يعد انتشار الجامعات من المعالم الملحوظة في حياتنا المعاصرة، وهذا النمو السريع في الجامعات، من حيث عددها وحجمها، وتعقد تكوينها الداخلي يوازيه في الوقت ذاته انحسار وتقهقر في الوعي الفردي والاجتماعي، مما يتضمن في طياته خطر القضاء على سبب وجودها. إذا ما غاب عن الأذهان ذلك الفهم الواسع لمهمة الجامعات. ولذلك اخترنا وايتهيد لما أحرزه من نجاح بوصفه أستاذا جامعيا وعميدا للكلية، وهو ما يدعم رؤيته وتخطيطه المجمل للجامعة المثالية دعما قويا، بما فيها من طلاب طلعة يحفزهم أساتذة يحملون عبء التعليم الجامعي في خفة ونشاط، ويتغلغل فيهم شغف بموضوعهم على وجه خاص وبالمعرفة عامة. وهناك هيئة الإدارة، حيث تتبنى بوضوح تام حقيقة الجامعة، وفلسفتها في التعليم. إن هذا الخليط من المثالية والوعي الواقعي بالمصاعب العملية التي تنطوي عليها عملية استخدام هذه المثاليات يعد واحدا من بين أعظم الملامح قيمة في موقفه من التعليم الجامعي. ويضاف إلى ذلك أنها عقيدته، التي نادى بها ومات عليها. وهي أن مصير الحضارة العقلية، في العالم كله، وديعة إلى حد بعيد، بين يدي الجامعات فهي المنوطة بتجميع رأس المال العقلي للعالم كله.
