|b When people participate in a conversation, they follow the cooperative principle (CP) in order to make a successful conversation. Grice (1975: 45) makes a general distinction between what is said by a speaker and what he means. Then, he classifies these nine maxims into four categories: quality, quantity, relation, and manner. Many scholars make distinctions between different kinds of cooperation in order to restrict the extent of Grice's cooperative principle. The aim of the research is to analyze Grice's maxims in British and American Conversations. It is hypothesized that people in both countries will break the maxims in conversations. The research is divided into two sections: the first section deals with theoretical background which includes subjects such as cooperative principle, kinds of cooperation, Grice maxims, Implicatures, difference between observing and not observing a maxim, and flouting, violating, opting out the maxim. The second section deals with the data analysis which is concerned with the analysis of British and American conversations.
