Landsat satellite images of Elmergeb Province have been used for the analysis of land use/land cover changes, because the monitoring of LU/LC changes is very important for the planner, management governmental and non-governmental organizations and the scientific community. All landsat images (1985 TM, 1988 TM, and 2003 ETM+) are rectified and registered to a common map projection, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone 33 North. Supervised classification has been applied to classify the images to different land use categories. Seven land use/ land cover classes are identified Irrigation areas, Forest, Rain-fed arable lands, Grazing lands, Urban, Water and Quarries and off-road traffic. The overall accuracy for a 1985 image is 91.80%, 1988 image is 87.12% and for a 2003 image is 91.51%. The aim of this study was to detect land use/land cover changes in Elmergeb Province.
