مثل الوجود الإسلامي في شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية حدثا بارزا شغل حيزا كبيرا في مخيلة الأسبان لا سيما المستشرقين (المتعصبون) إذ نظر هؤلاء المتعصبون إلى الإسلام بأنه قوة طارئة غزت بلادهم ودمرت أرثهم وتاريخهم وفكرهم الحضاري، وأن الإسلام فرض نفسه عليهم بواقعية لا يمكنهم التنصل منها، وأخذوا يقارنون بين إسبانيا النصرانية وإسبانيا الإسلامية، ووظفوا ذلك في صراع قومي وديني. وقد ارتبطت صورة الإسلام وحضارته في الأندلس في المتخيل الذهني للمستشرقين الأسبان (المتعصبين) بألفاظ وعبارات قدحية، فحينما ندرس خطابهم الاستشراقي يتضح مدى الكره والعداء الذي يحمله هؤلاء المتعصبين، لا سيما أن كل مستشرق كتب عن الأندلس ملزم بضرورة اتخاذ موقف إزاء حضارة الإسلام في الأندلس، ليتجسد للقارئ طبيعة المرتكز الذي استند عليه المستشرق في التعامل مع الإرث الحضاري الإسلامي في الأندلس، وقلما تجردت أقلام هؤلاء المستشرقين عن أهوائهم الشخصية وانتماءاتهم الفكرية والدينية في صياغة الخطاب الاستشراقي. ويعد المستشرق الإسباني فرانسيسكو خافيير سيمونيت من رواد الاتجاه المتعصب سالف الذكر، إذ لم يشهد الاستشراق قبلا له في كراهيته للإسلام والحقد على كل ما يمت بصلة للإسلام وحضارته، وفاق سائر إقرانه في الكره والتحامل على الإسلام والمسلمين في الأندلس، وعمد للتعبير عن فكره ببذاءة لم تعهد عند كل من تصدى للتأليف في مجال الاستشراق والنظر لحضارة الإسلام. ولضرورة تقتضيها الدراسة قسم البحث على مقدمة ومبحثين وخاتمة، خصص المبحث الأول لمعرفة التطور التاريخي للاستشراق الإسباني، أما المبحث الثاني فقد خصص لمعرفة موقف المستشرق فرانسيسكو خافيير سيمونيت من الحضارة الإسلامية في الأندلس وما حمله من عداء وكره للإسلام وحضارته في الأندلس، أما الخاتمة فقد تجسد فيها أبرز النتائج التي توصلت إليها الدراسة. وقد اتبع الباحث المنهج التاريخي القائم على ربط الأحداث وقراءة النصوص التاريخية واستنطاقها وتحليلها، لأجل الوصول إلى نتائج يمكن الاعتماد عليها.
