المستخلص: منذ تأسيسها، رسخت الجامعات الأمريكية تقليدا خاصا للغاية من حيث عملها والوسائل المالية المتاحة لها. يحاول هذا البحث إبراز الخصائص الرئيسية التي انتهت بتبوء الجامعات الأمريكية المراكز الأولى في التصنيف العالمي بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. يسلط البحث الضوء على دور العمل الخيري الأكاديمي وترابطه بنتائج التطور الاقتصادي الذي شهدته الولايات المتحدة منذ القرن التاسع عشر، على المؤسسات التعليمية والجامعية بالأساس. ويركز المقال في الجزء الأول على البدايات وخاصة على دور الجماعات الدينية في تكوين الجامعات الأولى منذ القرن السابع عشر. ويهتم الجزء الثاني بتوضيح العلاقات الممكنة بين الثقافة والاقتصاد والعمل الخيري، من أجل فهم أفضل لتأثير أموال الوقف على التعليم بشكل عام والمؤسسات الجامعية بشكل خاص. في هذا السياق التاريخي، يستخدم الباحث جامعة هارفارد ((نموذجا مثاليا))، بالمعنى الفيبري للمصطلح والذي لا يعني ((النموذج الأفضل)) ولكنه الذي يحمل الخصائص الممثلة للمؤسسات الجامعية الوقفية، وذلك باتجاه فهم القواعد التي يسير عليها النظام التعليمي الأمريكي، وبالتالي رصد الممارسات التي تحكم تطوره.

Since their founding, American universities have perpetuated a very particular tradition in terms of their structure, and their financial resources. This article attempts to highlight the main characteristics that explain a successful historical path that propelled American universities to the top of the world rankings, especially after World War II. The role of academic philanthropy will be highlighted as well as the connections between the economic boom that the United States has experienced since the 19th century. In the first part, the article focuses on the beginnings and particularly on the role of religious communities in the formation of the first universities since the 17th century. The second part will seek to clarify the possible relationships between culture, economy and philanthropy, in order to understand the impact of endowment foundations on education in general and university institutions in particular. Within this historical context, Harvard University will be our ideal type, in the Weberian sense of the term, to better understand the structural bases of the American academic universe, and thus better understand the principles that govern its evolution.

Depuis leurs fondations, les universités américaines ont perpétré une tradition très particulière quant à leur fonctionnement et les moyens financiers dont ils disposent. Cet article essaye de souligner les principales caractéristiques qui expliquent un cheminement historique qui avait réussi à propulser les universités américaines aux premiers rangs des classements mondiaux surtout après la deuxième guerre mondiale. Le rôle de la philanthropie académique sera mis en relief ainsi que les connexions suscité par l’essor économique qu’avaient connu les États-Unis depuis le 19ème siècle. Dans une première partie l’article s’attache aux commencements et particulièrement au rôle des communautés religieuses dans la formation des premières universités depuis le 17ém siècle. La deuxième partie s’attachera à clarifier les rapports éventuels entre culture, économie et philanthropie, afin de mieux cerner l’impact des fonds de dotation sur l’éducation en général et les institutions universitaires en particulier. Dans ce contexte historique l’université de Harvard sera notre type idéal, au sens wébérien du terme, pour mieux appréhender les bases structurelles de cet univers académique américain, et ainsi mieux comprendre les principes qui gouvernent son évolution.
