This paper argues that ESP books used in Iraqi colleges of law fail to meet the basic criteria for this type of books. The paper does so by evaluating the appropriateness of the textbook taught for law colleges freshmen: Riyadh al-Qaysi’s Introduction to the Study of Law (1967). Having taught this textbook for 3 academic years, the researchers have come to the conclusion that it is highly unsuitable for accomplishing the goals it is supposed to accomplish and should be replaced, with the replacement being a book containing material gathered based on a process of needs analysis. The scope of the current paper, however, will be limited to the evaluation part and will not be extended to discuss an appropriate substitute. A separate paper will be devoted for suggesting such alternative. It is important to note that this paper does not attack the book as such. It simply argues that, in the third decade of the twenty-first century, freshmen at colleges of law can be presented with a much more suitable textbook to teach them certain aspects of their discipline in English and prepare them for labour market demands. The textbook is evaluated based on 9 selected criteria for textbook evaluation. The paper shows that the textbook in question fails to meet most of them. |
