المستخلص: The Nigerian Folktales (irrespective of their region), are considered one of their most important cultural tributaries which continue to play a huge role in society despite the challenges they face as a result of the spread of the media and modern communications, in addition to the previous technological revolution. Yet, it could be affirmed that in recent times such tributaries are threatened to fade and disappear in the society. This paper aims at highlighting on the importance of Nigerian folktales and examines certain factors that helped in their sustainability to continue to perform the social roles and other mission in the light of contemporary life. Meanwhile, the paper also uncovers some of the challenges facing it in the present time. References are also made on some preventive means that must be taken in order to maintain such cultural tempo across generations in the Nigerian society. The paper does all this by focusing its discussion mainly on issues related to Nigerian folktale, its development in modern civil life, the challenge and the dangers it faces, among others.
