|a شهدت خمسينيات القرن العشرين محاولات الدول الغربية لربط الدول العربية ومنها الأردن بأحلاف عسكرية لمجابهة الاتحاد السوفياتي والشيوعية لضمان هيمنتهم وسيطرتهم على المنطقة، ويعد حلف بغداد أحد تلك الأحلاف، كان يعتقد إن الأردن سوف تعلن الانضمام الى الحلف لاسيما وأن الأردن بلد معدوم الموارد محاط من الغرب بعدو (إسرائيلي) لذلك كانت محاولاته لدخول حلف بغداد هو الحصول على مكاسب اقتصادية بالدرجة الأولى تضمن له ديمومة عجلة البلاد، ولكن مجلس النواب الرابع بفاعليته وبمساعدة الشعب الأردني استطاع إفشال محاولات ضم الأردن إلى حلف بغداد، وساهم في إسقاط أربع حكومات، وجعل الحكومة الأردنية ترفض الدخول إلى حلف بغداد.
