|a لعبت الإبل دورا اقتصاديا كبيرا في حياة العرب قبل الإسلام، وهو دور معروف أشارت إليه العديد من الدراسات العلمية. وإلى جانب ذلك فإنها لعبت دورا آخر ذا أهمية كبيرة لا يقل عن ذلك الدور الاقتصادي؛ فكانت وسيلة من وسائل الحرب والقتال بما تقوم به من نقل للمؤن والعتاد أو اعتلاء ظهورها من قبل المحاربين. ويناقش هذا البحث ذلك الدور العسكري في ضوء كتابات هيرودوت ومقارنتها مع الشواهد الأثرية المكتشفة في شبه الجزيرة العربية وبلاد النهرين، لإبراز دور الجمل العربي في ساحات القتال ولإظهار مدى صحة أو خطأ ما أورده المؤرخ اليوناني من معلومات.
|b The Economic role, which the camel played in the daily life of the Ancient Arabs, is well known and has been subjected to many scientific studies. Another military role, of great importance no less than that of the economic role, has been played. Camel was one of the equipment of war and fighting; transporting supplies, or the warriors ride it. This article discusses that military role in the light of Herodotus' writings and the archaeological evidences from the Arabian Peninsula and Mesopotamia, to highlight the role of the Arabian camel on the battlefields and to show the extent of correctness or wrongness of the information provided by the Greek historian.
