من الأمور المتفق عليها أن المسمى الوظيفي لمن يتولى عملا في مكانه الصحيح من خريجي أقسام الاجتماع هو مسمي باحث اجتماعي، وذلك بحسب إعدادهم وتأهيلهم العلمي، حتى وإن اختلفت مجالات عملهم في مؤسسات المجتمع المختلفة، ومن المسلم به أيضا أن مهنة الباحث الاجتماعي ليست مهنة سهلة كما يعتقد البعض، إذا ما قيست بالمهن الأخرى في مجال الأعمال المجتمعية شأنها في ذلك شأن مهنة الأخصائي الاجتماعي. وعلي الرغم من أن المؤسسات التعليمية التي يتخرج منها الباحث الاجتماعي هي أقسام الاجتماع بكليات الآداب، تعمل جاهدة على تطوير برامج الدراسة بما يحقق تكوين باحث اجتماعي أداؤه يواكب المتغيرات الاجتماعية التي تشهدها البلاد، في عالم صار كقرية كونية معولمة، ومطالب بتغيرات جادة وسريعة في كل مجالات الحياة، وتحتاج إلي إصلاحات أساسية تأخذ في حسبانها صون كرامة الإنسان والحفاظ على حقوقه، وإعطائه حريته في التعبير وإبداء الرأي ومشاركته في اتخاذ قراراته المتصلة بحق تقرير مصيره، ولن يكون هذا إلا بالتطبيق الآمن للديموقراطية السلمية. فإن ثمة معوقات تقف في سبيل تحقيق هذه المهنة للكفاءة المطلوبة منها، بسبب ما يعانيه طلاب العلوم الاجتماعية من معوقات في عملية التدريب الميداني، قد ترجع لأسباب مجتمعية أو معوقات في الإشراف العلمي أو معوقات خاصة بالطلاب، وكلها تعتبر معوقات تحد من نجاح خطط وبرامج التدريب في تحقيق أهدافها. والدراسة الحالية بها ثلاث مفاهيم رئيسية هي: التدريب الميداني -المعوقات أو التحديات -جائحة كورونا.
