This paper puts flesh on the bones of the question of femininity in postmodern British literature. Jeanette Winter son's Oranges are Not the Only fruit (1985) and the Passion (1987) are the chosen materials through which the author tries to challenge the traditional way femininity is represented in literature. The paper attempts also to offer an inside insight into the complex reality of Winter son's female characters, and how they are torn between their femininity and societal expectations of women. Hence, with a vivid feminist consciousness, Winter son presents her female protagonists in an endless struggle to overcome gender norms and embark on their journey of self discovery. Conclusively, Winter son's depiction of her female characters as rebellious is, in fact, a way to show her revolt against all forms of women suppression. |
