إن منظمة الوحدة الأفريقية قد فكرت في أوج أيامها في تخليص القارة من قضية الاستعمار والقضاء على التفرقة العنصرية وبعد انتهاء هذه المرحلة أصبحت مهمة الاتحاد الأفريقي هي تبنى خطة خاصة بكيفية تحقيق متطلبات المرحلة الجديدة التي تمر بها الدول الأفريقية. والتي تتضمن عددا من القضايا الرئيسية، والتي يأتي على رأسها قضية الديون الأفريقية، والوضع الاقتصادي المتدهور، وانتشار ما يعرف بثقافة الحرب وسعت لإحلال السلام وجذب الاستثمارات بعدة إجراءات منها دمج المجموعات الاقتصادية المنتشرة عبر القارة في مجموعة واحدة تسمى المجموعة الاقتصادية الأفريقية وأصبحت الأولوية لجذب رؤوس الأموال المطلوبة للاستثمار لجعل الثروات الأفريقية ذات قوة تنافسية في حركة الاقتصاد العالمي. وهناك بعض المؤسسات والآليات التي أنشئت تحت مظلة الاتحاد الأفريقي ساهمت في تحقيق نسبة من السلام والأمن الأفريقي مثل مجلس السلم والأمن الأفريقي، وهيئة الحكماء الأفريقية وصندوق السلام. عمل الاتحاد الأفريقي على تحقيق الاندماج الاقتصادي والسيامي بين دول القارة الأفريقية بشكل أكبر وإكمال مسيرة العمل الجماعي الأفريقي من خلال خطة تمر بمرحل ثلاث حنى عام 2030 ولقد شهد ت العلاقات بين الأمم المتحدة والاتحاد الأفريقي تطور كبير في مسار تسوية المنازعات الدولية وابتكار آليات جديدة في التسوية تقوم على الوقاية بمنع ظهور منازعات كما في آليات الدبلوماسية الوقائية، وفي صنع السلم وحفظ السلم وبناء السلم بعد انتهاء النزاع.
