المستخلص: The article seeks to study “sublimation” in Keats’s narrative poem The Eve of St. Agnes whereby “agency” is made an unwanted burden by the lovers, Porphyro and Madeline. This is due to their bitter realization that they do not want really to entertain “agency” that severs them from what they subjectively desire, which underscores the cleavage between their subjective and the objective worlds. Hence, the main aim of the article is to dwell on the nature of the subjective world that the lovers build and its fate while confronting the objective reality. My primary objective is to highlight the ability of the poem to be read psychoanalytically via Julia Kristeva’s works, particularly her differentiation between “semiotic” and “symbolic” orders.
