المستخلص: كان لذم أئمة السلف لـ علم الكلام أثر لا يخفي على المتكلمين، تجلى في استثارة أنظارهم، وإزعاج دواعيهم إلى تقديم جوابات- تصريحية أو ضمنية- للانفصال عن ذلك الذم من جهة، ولإضفاء المشروعية على «علم الكلام من جهة أخرى. فكان من الأغراض المنشودة من هذا البحث غرضان: أحدهما: ضبط تفاريع تلك الجوابات بنظمها في مسالك جامعة تعرف بها، وتدنيها بين يدي القارئ. والغرض الآخر: فحص تلك المسالك لاختبار صدقها؛ ليتحرر للمنصف من بعد مدى سداد الموقف السني في ذمه لـ «علم الكلام». ومن نتائج هذا البحث: السمة البارزة في المسالك التي سلكها المتكلمون للانفصال عن ذم الأئمة للكلام أنها مؤسسة على أن الذم متجه إلى عوارضه المنفكة عنه، لا إلى ذاته، ولا إلى عوارضه اللازمة له.

The criticism of the Salaf (early Islamic scholars) against Ilm al-Kalam (speculative theology) had an undeniable effect on speculative theologians, by catching their attention and challenging them to provide answers explicit or implicit to disassociate themselves from this criticism on one hand, and to legitimize Ilm al-Kalam on the other hand. This research had two main objectives: Firstly, to organize the various responses to this criticism into comprehensive categories that are easy to understand, and to make them more accessible to the reader. Secondly, to examine these categories in order to evaluate their validity: thus providing the impartial observer an understanding of the extent to which the Sunni stance is valid in its criticism of Ilm al-Kalam. One of the findings of this research is that the prominent feature in the approaches adopted by the speculative theologians to dissociate from the criticism of the scholas towards Kalam is that they are predicated on the notion that the criticism is directed towards the non-essential aspects of their discourse, and not what is essential or inherent to it.
