المستخلص: يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة مدلول الجهل وموقعه من الحلم والعلم؛ أهو ضد الحلم ومقابله، أم ضد العلم ونقيضه؟ وذلك من خلال دلالته في اللغة العربية والقرآن الكريم. اتّبع الباحث فيه المنهج الاستقرائي في جمع المادة العلمية، والمنهج التحليلي والمنهج الوصفي والمنهج النقدي في تنظيم المادة العلمية وصياغتها. وتوصل الباحث إلى نتائج، من أبرزها: أنّ أصل الجهل في اللغة أنه ضد الحلم، ولما كان الحلم ثمرة من ثمرات العلم استعمل في مقابلة الجهل، وهذا ما يميل إليه الباحث، ويؤكد هذا قول ابن عاشور عن الجهل: إنه "ضد الحلم والرشد، وهو أشهر إطلاق الجهل في كلام العرب قبل الإسلام". وأن أغلب معاني الجهل وما اشتق منه في القرآن الكريم يدور حول معنى الحمق والسفه وسوء الخلق ونحو ذلك، لا سيما في مثل قوله تعالى: (بجهالة). وأن صفات حروف كلمة "جهل" الثلاثة يغلب عليها صفات الضعف، وفي ذلك إشارة إلى غلبة الضعف على الجاهل.

This research aims at studying the connotation of ignorance and its position from forbearance and knowledge, is it the opposite of forbearance or the opposite of knowledge? This was done through its connotation in Arabic language and in the noble Qur’an. The researcher followed the extrapolatory method in compiling the scientific material, and the analytical and descriptive and critical methods in arranging the scientific material and in drafting it. The researcher reached certain findings, the most important of which included: that literally, ignorance is the opposite of forbearance, and since forbearance is one of the products of knowledge, it was used in the opposite if ignorance, this is the opinion chosen by the researcher, and this was confirmed by the statement of Ibn ‘Āshour where he stated that ignorance is: “the opposite of forbearance and prudence, this is the most common connotation of ignorance in the statements of the Arabs before Islam”. And that most of the meanings of ignorance and its derivatives in the noble Qur’an revolve around the meaning of foolishness, imprudence, bad behaviour etc., most especially in the likes of the Word of Allah: (be-jahālah). And that the attributes of the three letters of the Arabic word “jahl” are characterized with weakness, and this points to how conspicuously weak ignorance is.
