أطلق مصطلح الكتب الورقية بعد ظهور الكتب الإلكترونية. وكان المصطلح السائد هو الكتب. وقد لعبت الكتب الورقية عبر التاريخ دورا كبيرا في الحركة العلمية والأدبية والفنية، وهي الأساس في تجسيد الوقائع التاريخي وإيصالها والعمود الفقري للتواصل بين حضارات الشعوب في العلوم والآداب والفنون والعلاقات الاجتماعية. وقد تطور طبع الكتب الورقية بشكل كبير، كما أن تطور المواصلات الدولية سهل وصول هذه الكتب إلى ابعد منطقة في العالم بسرعة فائقة. ولا تزال الكتب الورقية هي الأساس في المصادر العلمية، ولا يعترف بالكتب الإلكترونية إلا إذا اتبعت صيغة الكتب الورقية. وإن التطور العلمي الحديث جعل العلاقة بين الكتب الورقية والإلكترونية وثيقة وبالإمكان نقل كل منها للآخر. والبحث في الكتب الورقية يتطلب دراسة تاريخ الكتب الورقية وأنواعها وما يعد من الكتب الورقية، والحقوق التي يتمتع بها المؤلف، كحق نشر كتابه وتعديله وسحبه من التداول وإتلافه. وقد تضمن البحث ثلاثة مباحث، الأول تطور طباعة الكتب الورقية وأنواعها، تناولنا فيه أهمية الكتب الورقية، وتطور تكنولوجيا طباعة الكتب في الغرب وتضمن المبحث الثاني أنواع الكتب الورقية التي تتمتع بالحماية، كما تناولنا فيه المصنفات المكتوبة المتمتعة بذات حماية الكتب، أما المبحث الثالث فقد تضمن طبيعة الحماية التي يتمتع بها المؤلف، أوضحنا فيه الشخص الذي يتمتع بالحماية، وأنواع الحقوق التي يتمتع بها مؤلفو الكتب الورقية. واتجهنا لدراسة الموضوع في ضوء القوانين الوطنية والدولية. وقد تضمنت الدراسة خاتمة تناولنا فيها أهم ما توصل إليه البحث.
