This paper delves into the multifaceted implications arising from the presence of female authority, examining its intricate interplay with entrenched patriarchal traditions within the context of the Qadiri Būdshīshi Sufi Order, a Moroccan Sufi order. It investigates ways in which female spiritual authority intersects with the order’s patriarchy. The assertion posits that the Sheikh, occupying the esteemed role of spiritual guide within the order, entrusts the responsibility of dispensing spiritual guidance to the lmqedmat, who are female spiritual facilitators. However, the Sheikh’s authority acts as a defining boundary for female spiritual influence as it converges with doctrinal disputes, constraining their jurisdiction to managerial and structural mantles. The current paper offers a fresh perspective on the intersection of concepts such as agency, empowerment, and authority within the context of Sufi women in the Qadiriyya order. Through a re-examination of these concepts, it sheds new light on the roles and experiences of Sufi women, challenging prevailing narratives and highlighting their transformative agency, empowerment, and nuanced authority. It revisits these notions and their relationship with the context of collective action, and modes of transmission of knowledge. This paper builds on a qualitative method of research, enriched through the participant-researcher’s fieldwork experience in order to gain insights into the experiences, perspectives, and narratives of the subjects under investigation deploying collected data from a fieldwork experience in zawiya, pertaining to the Qadiri Būdshīshi Sufi order.
