|a تكمن أهمية رحلة جوزيف بيتس كونه أول رحالة إنجليزي يزور ويكتب عن أحوال مكة والمدينة والمنورة وكذلك وصفه الدقيق لمناسك الحج، والأحوال في مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة، وكذلك طريق الحج الأفريقي، وهو أول رحالة يصف هذا الطريق. على الرغم من صغر سن بيتس في رحلته إلى الحج إلا انه استطاع أن يكتب لنا كتاب رائع يصف لنا فيه الحج والأحوال في مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة، لذا جاء هذا البحث للحديث عن أحوال مكة المكرمة والمدينة والمنورة في رحلة جوزيف بيتس. عرض البحث لمحة عن حياة بيتس قبل وقوعه في الأسر وتم الحديث عن أسرته وأصوله، وشغفه بالبحر والملاحة أدى إلى وقوعه في الأسر في الشمال الأفريقي ليصبح عبدا يباع ويشترى وهذا الأمر كان ظاهر في هذه المدة الزمنية في الصراع بين الشرق والغرب. وبعد أن بيع أكثر من مرة استقر عند رجل مسن هذا الرجل اجبره على مرافقه للحج. وصف بيتس رحلته من الجزائر إلى مصر وهو أول من كتب عن الطريق الواصل بين الجزائر ومصر، ووصف الحوال في الجزائر قبيل انطلاقه في رحله الحج والترتيبات التي يقوم بها الحاج قبيل الانطلاق، وقد وصف الإسكندرية والقاهرة والطريق البحري إلى رابغ، ويصف ملابس الإحرام ويستمر في وصفه بالطريق إلى أن يصل الحجاج إلى جدة التي تبعد مسيرة يوم واحد عن مكة المكرمة. يعطينا بيتس وصفا دقيقا لمناسك الحج ويصف المسجد الحرام وصحن الكعبة من الخارج والداخل حيث اتيحت له الفرصة للدخول في جوف الكعبة، ويصف لنا وقفه عرفه ورمي الجمرات، ويتحدث بيتس عن أحوال مكة وأسواقها ويصف لنا المدينة والمنورة ورحله العودة إلى الجزائر أولا ثم إلى أوروبا وصولا إلى موطنه الأصلي إنجلترا، وتخليه عن الدين الإسلامي بعد وصوله إلى الأراضي المقدسة كما يصفها.

He described Alexandria, Cairo and the sea route to Rabigh, describes the Ihram clothing and continues to describe On the way until the pilgrims arrive in Jeddah, which is a day's walk from Mecca. pitts gives us an accurate description of the rituals of Hajj and describes the alharam and the nave of the Kaaba from the outside and inside where he had the opportunity to enter the hollow of the alkaeba.
