المستخلص: إن الإعراب هو الإفصاح عن المعاني، وللنحاة في التأليف بين العبارات، والكشف عن المدلولات أساليب وطرائق، والمتضلع بهذا العلم من خاض في معينهم وحرر مصطلحاتهم وأساليبهم. إن الاختصار أصل عظيم من أصول اللغة العربية، وهذا الاختصار لا يكون عبثيا، يضلل في المعاني، ويجحف في المباني، لذلك كان لا بد للمحذوف المختصر معوض عنه يسد مسده ويقوم مقامه، فعبر النحاة بقولهم: (سد مسد)، أي قام مقامه. ولنقترب أكثر من فهم هذا المصطلح كان لا بد من فهم معناه اللغوي، ثم سبره وتتبعه في كتب النحاة، لنرصد تطوره في كلام المتقدمين والمتأخرين، وجرد المواضع التي أطبق النحاة على استعمالهم له فيها، حتى انتقل من كونه ظاهرة إلى مصطلح، نحو: سد الحال مسد الخبر، وسد المصدر المؤول مسد مفعولي ظن وأخواتها، وسدت جملة جواب القسم أو جواب الشرط مسد الجوابين معا. وإنا إذ نحاول في هذا العمل أن نكون دراسة متكاملة عن تعبير النحاة بقولهم: (سد مسد)، لا سيما حينما أوردوه في جري كلامهم، أو دأبوا على استعماله في مواضع محدودة.

While we are trying in this work to form an integrated study on the expression of grammarians by saying: (replace his place), Especially where they mentioned it in the course of their speech, or they used it in limited places.
