Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give (2017) examines the enduring machinery of racism in America through the lens of police brutality. Analyzing Starr Carter’s story as a Black teenager navigating a white-supremacist society, the paper deploys multimodal social semiotics and critical race theory. Employing a kaleidoscopic lens of multimodal social semiotics and critical race theory, the paper unveils how sound, typography, and intersectional identities weave a tapestry of anti-racist discourse. By analyzing these diverse expressions, it reveals their crucial role in dismantling racist narratives and fostering social empathy. |
