المستخلص: This study investigates the most common types of spelling errors and mistakes made by Libyan student of English language at Elmergib University. The main concern of this study is to examine the causes of such misspellings challenges encountered by students in at Elmergib University. Data was collected from 20 students of English language at Elmergib University via dictation tests, and analyzed based on Cook’s classification of spelling errors. The results showed four types of spelling errors: substitution, addition, omission and transposition. Further, ten teachers were selected to answer a questionnaire in order to explore their attitudes towards the reasons behind the common spelling challenges of students of English language at Elmergib University. According to the findings of this study, the difficulties that majority of the students face have been attributed to a number of causes, such as the irregularity of the orthographic system of English, the mother tongue interference, the lack of knowledge of the sound letter relationships and words which have similar pronunciation. These spelling difficulties lead learners to make many spelling mistakes that distort their written production, affecting negatively their overall writing proficiency. Throughout this study, the researchers suggested a number of strategies, which may support teachers to help their students to overcome or at least minimize such spelling errors, such as doing more practices in spelling. Some implications and a number of instructional recommendations are suggested here in order to improve various techniques of teaching spelling which is one of the most important elements in mastering a language in general.
