This research focuses on the reality of the maritime freight transport in Algeria. In fact, almost all of the country’s trade is carried out by sea, which gives a strategic character to the mode of transport by ship and the port infrastructures providing support thereto. Nevertheless, logistical costs, particularly the cost of sea freight, represent a real obstacle to the development of maritime trade in Algeria. Besides, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the main constraints to the development of this sector, whilst proposing also a number of alternatives to alleviate the difficulties encountered by the maritime transport of goods in Algeria. More to the point, we will illustrate, through this research, an overview of the maritime freight transport sector in Algeria together with the main difficulties associated thereof. Likewise, we will examine the strategy implemented by the government for development purpose of this sector. As a consequence, the main findings highlight the inadequacy of port logistical infrastructures, which has repercussions on the time taken to process goods, along with the fact that containers and ships return empty, thus making maritime transport in Algeria one of the most expensive in the Mediterranean basin.
