|b The shift towards English in higher education mainstreams is a trend in Algeria. English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) reflects the nation change to meet with internationalisation and ‘Englishisation’ of education sectors. The current paper argues that the Algerian community is not only facing the colonial history, but it is encountered with a neoliberal imposition of English. This paper highlights that EMI may deteriorate the status of local/national languages from achieving international level, and complicate its linguistic status. The current paper argues that nationalism in the past assimilates to neoliberalism in their ontologies to develop language literacy and human capital. This study examines the socio-economic sphere changes, including the linguistic landscape to discuss the motivating factors towards the shift to EMI in Algeria.
