The fish sector in Egypt is a key pillar in economic and social development and food security where it is relied upon to provide a large part of animal protein since there are many problems limiting the expansion of production of red meat and poultry meat, and the domestic production of fish reached about 1935 thousand tons in 2018 while the consumption reached about 2291 thousand tons, which indicates a fish gap estimated at about 248 thousand tons representing about 17% of consumption. The research aims to study and analyze the current situation of the fish sector in Egypt and the research relied on descriptive and quantitative analytical method, using some standard statistical and economic models and the study has reached several results, the most important of which are: - It was found that the average total fish production from natural fisheries amounted to about 374.65 thousand tons during the period 2000-2018 representing about 30.96% of the average Egyptian fish production during the study period, and it decreases annually by about 3.23 thousand tons, at a statistically moral annual rate of about 0.86%. - It was also found that the average total fish production from fish farming amounted to about 836.2 thousand tons during the period 2000-2018 representing about 69.04% of the average Egyptian fish production during the study period, and that it is increasing annually by about 68.34 thousand tons statistically moral amounting to about 8.17%. - Studying the development of fish consumption in Egypt shows that the amount of fish consumption per year increased by 74.21 thousand tons, with a statistically increased annual growth rate of about 5.1% of the annual average. - A food gap of fish was found in all years of the study period, and the annual increase of the food gap of fish by 9.32 thousand tons, equivalent to a statistically increased annual growth rate of the food gap of fish of about 3.76% of the annual average. - The average self-sufficiency rate of fish in Egypt was about 83% during the study period, and shows that the rate of self sufficiency of fish increased by an annual amount that is not statistically moral. - The rate of dependence on the outside of fish by about 17% during the study period, as it was shown that Egypt's dependence on the outside in meeting its fish needs decreased by an annual amount showing a decrease in the rate of dependence on the outside of fish by an annual amount not statistically moral. - By studying the factors affecting the consumption of fish shows the moral impact of the variable population, per capita income on the amount of fish consumption in Egypt. By estimating the food security factor for fish in Egypt during the study period, it became clear that the food security factor for fish in Egypt decreased by a relative lye of 0.2 and this is a good indicator, and through the results, the research reached several recommendations, the most important of which is to achieve sustainable development and promote the fish sector: 1- For natural fisheries: A- Sea:- Development of the Egyptian fishing fleet in line with the modern methods of fishing of international waters and expansion of fish farming in Egyptian shores. B- Lakes: Attention to scientific research and scientific innovations in the field of education, nutrition and reproduction in order to preserve the natural resources of fish. 2- For fish farming: A- Developing existing production systems and transferring technology for this activity from developed countries. B- Expanding the establishment of hatcheries to provide fish farms with the required species. |
