520 |b The aim is of this study is to analyse how the intersemioses between words and images in ‘The Broken handle’ (1984) succeeds in constructing a world of communication within this multimodal text. The Broken Handle’ is a work written by Farouk Saloum and illustrated by Nadeem Muhsin for pre-schoolers. To establish the relationships between the writer/illustrator, and the viewer-child on the one hand and the represented characters in the story on the other hand, the aspect of involvement, engagement, power and intimacy are analysed. This analysis is conducted with the purpose of studying both the interpersonal and interactive components found in the tale to show the extent to which the verbal and visual modalities help in demonstrating the engagement among the represented participants in the story, and between the young readers and those characters. In order to achieve this goal, the analysis will explore the association between verbal and visual components in the story by making a comparison between the interpersonal meaning transmitted by the words and the identical interactive meaning of the images. This analysis will elucidate how the interplay of the story's words and illustrations contribute to demonstrate engagement.
