المستخلص: يعمل الكاتب في هذا المقال على إبراز الخصائص المميزة للمأساة الاستعمارية كما فهمها ورسمها ألبير مامي في كتابه صورة المستعمر مسبوقا بصورة المستعمر. وهو يسعى في هذا السياق إلى رصد أهم مظاهر نفي الإنسانية ونفي الهوية الثقافية عن المستعمر، وخاصة من خلال هيمنة المستعمر على كل من اللغة والذاكرة. وإذا كانت صورة المستعمر تركز بشكل خاص على سيكولوجية هذه الشخصية وعلى ملامح وعيها بذاتها، فإن رهانا سياسيا يظل يعتمل في خلفية هذه الصورة وهو رهان الهيمنة الاستعمارية على المجتمع عبر الهيمنة على مؤسساته الرمزية والواقعية. وفي هذا الإطار، يعتبر الكاتب أن ألبير مامي، وإن تمكن من استخلاص بعض جوانب هذا الرهان وإظهارها، فإن سكوته عن بعض الجوانب الأخرى، وما تثيره من توترات بين الاستعمار والديمقراطية مثلا، يمكن أن يؤدي إلى فهم منقوص للسياق الذي يتم فيه إنتاج شخصية المستعمر.

In this paper, the author redraws, in a critical perspective, the drama of colonialism as it was conceived and described by Albert Memmi in his «Portrait du colonisé précédé de Portrait du colonisateur». In this respect, he sets out the main features of the dehumanization of the colonized and those of the denial of his cultural identity via the manipulation of language and memory. The author emphasizes the political stakes of colonization, related basically to the domination over the colonized society through the domination over its symbolic and factual institutions. The thesis he seeks to defend in this paper is that Memmi has well explained different aspects of this political stake. However, his silence as regarding the epistemic and legal origins of these stakes is likely to lead to a false portrait of the drama of colonialism.

Dans cet article, l'auteur essaie de reconstruire les traits du drame colonial tel qu'il est saisi et décrit par Albert Memmi dans son «Portrait du colonisé précédé de Portrait du colonisateur». En partant des formes de déshumanisation et de déni de l'identité culturelle subies par le colonisé, il dégage l'arrière fond politique du portrait du colonisé. En effet, si ce portrait met en ligne de fuite la psychologie du colonisé et le mode de sa conscience de soi, il n'en reste pas moins que, à l'arrière plan, il y a un enjeu politique pour dominer la société colonisée à travers la domination de ses institutions. L'auteur défend la thèse que Memmi a bien explicité certains aspects de cet enjeu mais que, en gardant le silence sur les origines épistémiques et juridiques de ces enjeux, il risque de donner un portrait inachevé du drame colonial.
