Are Cryptocurrencies a New Form of Money?

Cryptocurrencies have become a central issue in digital economics. Many people view them as a new form of money. However, the economic essence of this new terminology is still debated, as the genesis of cryptocurrencies happened in the cryptography world and their application is intended for the economic world. This paper aims to assess the aptness of using the term "currency" when discussing cryptocurrencies, focusing on their three properties: a medium of exchange, unit of account, and a store of value. We find that cryptocurrencies are not a good substitute to traditional currencies, and do not fulfil the aforementioned basic functions of money. |
