المستخلص: Among the issues encountered in the study of proper nouns, the case of place names poses the challenge of identifying and interpreting these units. Place names, in reality, are units attributed to spaces since ancient times, with many of them being exposed to the phenomenon of evolution that often leads to alterations in forms and meanings. For a researcher to attribute meaning to these units, especially those that are altered, it is necessary to proceed by extracting their roots. However, when the unit is not transcribed correctly, this results in difficulties in classifying these units within the appropriate lexical family. In this brief analysis that we plan to undertake, we will attempt to present the various problems related to roots in the toponymic domain and their impact on the interpretation of toponymic units.
