The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) engaged in ijtihad (independent reasoning) during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Due to various reasons, such as not being aware of an abrogating ruling, forgetfulness, error, or not having received certain knowledge, differences arose among them in their ijtihad. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as the teacher, guide, and the greatest mujtahid (scholar engaging in ijtihad), would take a stance on each judgment that reached him. Being the role model, especially in such situations, it was incumbent upon the people to follow his guidance in these matters. This research aims to clarify and highlight the Prophetic guidance in dealing with juristic differences. Among his guidance (PBUH) was that he would not criticize a scholar who made an error in judgment, he would ask for evidence for any opinion that reached him, and he would encourage those who engaged in ijtihad, even if mistakes were made. |
