|b Since its independence, Algeria has suffered from a deep identity crisis caused by decades of French colonialism, which contributed to a fracture in culture and identity. Cultural values and identity issues in Algeria have become subjects of debate and conflict, reaching the point of struggle, so that the crisis of the state, societal events, and its real problems can only be understood in light of two conflicting directions in Algerian society (Modernists and Arabists). This article seeks to examine one of the most important indicators of culturalpolitical division in Algeria, highlighting key moments in the reform of the educational system, particularly the history subject. Every attempt to reform history education brings with it a contentious clash that reflects the depth of the identity crisis and the severity of the division within both society and the elite.
