| 520 | |b The endowment is one of the distinctive features of the Islamic community, having played a significant success on the scientific, economic, and social levels. \ This paper is concerned with the role of endowments from a scientific perspective and their effect on funding scholarly activities and research over the ages in all Islamic regions. \ The paper begins with an introduction explaining the lexical and technical meanings of “the endowment”, and the status of its legality as well as the constituent elements and types of an Islamic endowment. \ The paper proceeds to discuss the most important schools, mosques, and scholarly institutions which have been endowed or made into endowments, the proceeds of which were directed to the rise of scholarly knowledge in Egypt, Baghdad, Damascus and Halab. These places are of special significance since they were considered the most important beacons of knowledge in the Islamic world. \ The paper then examines some charitable endowments created by scholars and the wealthy, such as libraries for students of knowledge, and the extent of Muslims) interest in them. Endowments were not restricted to the Islamic legal sciences but extended to others such as medicine, translation, demonstrating the community)s interest and commitment to knowledge, and their overall view of man, life and the universe. \ The conclusion comprises the results reached in the paper and recommendations. \ Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. | ||
