يعد تكيف طلبة المرحلة الجامعية الأولى مع واقعهم وحياتهم الجديدة بطريقة سهلة وميسرة من القدرات المهمة التي يجب تنميتها لديهم، ويقع على عاتق الجامعات مسؤولية مساعدتهم على النجاح في حل المشكلات التي قد تواجههم، وذلك بإكسابهم الخبرات المتعددة للنجاح بهذه المهمة. عليه فإن إيجاد وسيلة قياس ملائمة، يمكن من خلالها تحديد مستويات تلكم الضغوط، وبالتالي وضع الحلول المناسبة لها، أمرا ضروريا لابد منه. ومن هنا هدفت الدراسة إلى تقنين مقياس (عامل الالتزام)، على عينة مقدارها (60) طالب وطالبة، ومن ثم تطبيقه على عينة مقدارها (200) طالب وطالبة، من المرحلة الأولى في كليات جامعة المثنى للسنة الدراسية (2009/2010)، للوقوف على حقيقة الفروق فيما بينهم بحسب الكليات التي ينتمون إليها لقد أستعمل الباحثون المنهج الوصفي، بأسلوبه المسحي لكونه ملائما لطبيعة هذه الدراسة وأهدافها. كما تمت الاستعانة بمقياس (عامل الالتزام)، كوسيلة أساسية لجمع البيانات، وبعد إكمال إجراءات البحث، وعرض النتائج وتحليلها، أستنتج الباحثون ارتفاع مستوى (عامل الالتزام) نسبيا لدى عينة البحث، وعدم وجود فروق بين مجاميع البحث، بحسب الكليات التي ينتمون إليها في متغير البحث (عامل الالتزام).
