|a القول المخرج هو: الحكم المستنبط في مسألة جزئية لم يرد فيها نص عن الإمام، بالاستناد إلى أصوله أو قواعده جريا على طريقته في الاستدلال، أو إلحاقها بما يشبهها من المسائل المروية عنه بوجود معنى ما نص عليه فيما سكت عنه، أو على بما خالفها في الحكم. وقد عرف التخريج مجموعة من المصطلحات ذات الصلة منها: قياس قول الإمام. ومقتضى القول. والقياس في المذهب. والاستقراء. والوجه. ولا يخرج المخرج عن المجتهد في المذهب المتقيد بمذهب إمام معين، فيسير على طريقته في الفتوى والاستدلال، ولا يخرج عن رأيه فيما أفتى فيه، وما سكت عنه الإمام يجتهد فيه على طريقته. وقد اشترط العلماء لبلوغ الفقيه درجة المخرجين: معرفته بقواعد إمامه الأصولية والفقهية، واطلاعه على مآخذ الأحكام. وأهليته للتخريج. وعلمه بالفقه وأصوله وأدلة الأحكام تفصيلاً، بصيراً بمسالك الأقيسة والمعاني، متبحرا في الفروع، متمرسا على التخريج والاستنباط. والقول المخرج تصح نسبته إلى إمام المذهب، وتجوز الفتوى به، ويجوز للقضاة تقليد فقهاء التخريج ومن دونهم، تحقيقا للمصلحة ودرءا للمفسدة الحاصلة عند شغور منصب القضاء.
