بحثت العديد من المدن وبخاصة التي تقع بالقرب من البحار والمحيطات عن مكان تلقي فيه مخلفات ساكنيها وملوثاتها، ولم تجد غير المسطحات المائية لتتخلص منها فيه؛ لظن البعض أن هذه المسطحات كبيرة وبإمكانها أن تستوعب كل هذه الملوثات ولا تضر بها، ولكن الدلائل أثبتت غير هذا، إذ أن الحجم الأكبر للملوثات حولت المسطحات المائية إلى مستودعات للمياه القذرة، وإلى مجاري مسممة تنعدم فيها العديد من أشكال الحياة المائية، وأن العديد من الأسماك والكثير من الكائنات الحية البحرية الأخرى بدأت تظهر على شاطئ البحر ميتة دون سبب واضح لذلك إلا التلوث البحري. إن هذه المشكلة عالمية ولم تتوقف عند بلد أو قطر دون آخر من الدول المطلة على البحار والمحيطات؛ لذا تعد ليبيا من ضمن هذه الدول التي لم تسلم من أضرار التلوث البحري بمياه الصرف الصحي، حيث لها العديد من المدن التي تقع على ساحل البحر الأبيض المتوسط وتلقي مخلفاتها فيه، ومن ضمنها مدينتي الخمس وسوق الخميس موضوع البحث، اللتان تتدفق مياه مجاريهما داخل البحر، حيث تكون محملة بكميات كبيرة من الملوثات الكيميائية متعددة الأنواع والمصادر، إضافة إلى فضلات المنازل والأماكن العامة، وجميعها تحتوي على ملوثات خطيرة تسبب أضراراً بالأحياء البحرية في ساحل منطقة الخمس وسوق الخميس وتنتقل عبر السلسلة الغذائية إلى الإنسان والحيوان في هاتين المنطقتين. \
