يعني هذا البحث بجمع أسماء الشجر من كتاب "المحيط في اللغة" للصاحب بن عباد (385هـ)، وصنع معجم لها، لنكمل به معجمنا الذي صنعناه في بحث سابق لنا لألفاظ النبات في كتاب المحيط أيضا، وقد وثقنا معجمنا هذا من كتب الشجر والنبات التي ألفها علماء اللغة العرب، ومعجمات اللغة والمعاني التي عني أصحابها بألفاظ النبات والشجر، ووسمنا هذا البحث بـ (معجم أسماء الشجر في كتاب "المحيط في اللغة" للصاحب بن عباد (ت385هـ) جمع وتوثيق). بلغ عدد أسماء الأشجار التي أشتمل عليها معجمنا الجديد (248) اسماً، وهذا العدد يزيد على عدد أسماء الشجر التي أشتمل عليها كثير من كتب النبات والشجر التي وصلت إلينا، لا بل إن ما ضمه هذا المعجم من أسماء الشجر فقط قريب مما حواه كتاب الأصمعي (ت216هـ) من أسماء النبات والشجر مجتمعين. وهذا يعني أن ما حواه يبلغ ضعف ما حواه كتاب النبات للأصمعي من أسماء الشجر ويزيد، كما أن ما جمعناه كان أكثر مما حوته غالبية معجمات المعاني التي أشتملت على أبواب خاصة بالشجر؛ ليس هذا حسب، بل إن معجمنا هذا ضم أسماء أشجار كثيرة لم نجدها في كتابي الأصمعي وأبي حنيفة الدينوري (282هـ)، ولا في معاجم النبات التي صنعها باحثون محدثون، وسبب تفرد معجمنا بأسماء أشجار لم يأت على ذكرها من أشرنا إليهم من المحدثين يعود إلى أن المحيط لم يكن موردا من مواردهم، وهنا تكمن أهمية المعجم الذي جمعناه، نأمل أن نكون قد وفقنا في عملنا هذا ومن الله التوفيق. \
