The refining industry is facing several challenges. One of the major challenges is the increase of hydrogen consumption for deeper hydro-treating, as part of environmental legislation restricting sulfur fuels, which further increases refinery hydrogen demand. Hydrogen management is becoming a priority issue in current refinery operations. Hydrogen management is used to identify the "bottlenecks" in the hydrogen distribution system and provides theoretical insights into the impact of hydrogen purification in the refinery process. The objective of this study was to highlight the importance of applying hydrogen management to the hydrogen distribution network for improving refinery’s output capabilities. In addition to the "pinch analysis" for improved solutions, hydrogen management requires further system tools for providing an efficient and productive output process. In addition to site improvement, hydrogen production requires continues support for sustaining performance. Sensitivity analysis and operating strategies have been developed for maintaining performance of hydrogen distribution networks. Finally, the study includes cases examples from selected worldwide experiences in applying hydrogen management.
