يصنف المربي الأمريكي جون ديوي ضمن كبار فلاسفة التربية الذين أنجبتهم الإنسانية عبر تاريخها الطويل، وذلك تقديرا لإنتاجه الفكري والتربوي الغزير الذي وضعه في خدمة أمته الأمريكية خاصة، والمجتمع الإنساني بصفة عامة، والذي تجسد في عشرات المؤلفات التي بسط نظريته التربوية الرائدة فيها. لقد وصفت الأفكار التربوية التي قدمها ديوي بالأفكار التقدمية، وذلك لنزعتها الثورية التي كسر بها القوالب الجامدة المعطلة لقدرات الإنسان واستعداداته، أو مدرسة القرون الوسطى كما سماها، التي وجهت التربية في غير وجهتها الصحيحة. عبر ديوي عما قام بو بالثورة الكوبرنيكية، وهو محق في ذلك، لأن دلالات وتأثيرات أفكاره لم تكن بعيدة عن نتائج ما قام بو كوبرنيكس في علم الفلك – و إن كان ذلك في مجال مختلف - فإذا كان هذا الأخير قد غير مركز الكون إلى الشمس، فإن ديوي غير مركز العملية التربوية إلى الطفل بعدما كان ينظر إليه خطئا أنو في المعلم أو الكتاب المدرسي. لقد وصل إشعاع النظرية التربوية التي قدمها ديوي وبريقها إلى العالم العربي، حيث أرى كثير من المربين والمفكرين والفاعلين التربويين العرب فيها الوصفة الناجعة الشافية للمنظومات التربوية العربية من أمراضها المزمنة.
The American educator John Dewey is classified among the great philosophers of education that humanity gave birth to throughout its long history. This is in recognition of his profuse intellectual and educational production which he put in the service of his American nation in particular and the humanitarian community in general. This production is embodied in tens of compositions where he put his leading educational theory. The educational ideas presented by Dewey have been described as being progressive, and this is due to their revolutionary tendency that broke the stereotypes disabling the human capabilities and aptitudes, or the school of Middle Ages as he named it, which did not direct education to the right destination. Dewey expressed what he has done by the Copernican Revolution. He is right in that because the implications and effects of his thoughts were not far from the results of what Copernics has done in astronomy—even if it was in a different domain. If the latter has changed the center of the universe to the sun, Dewey has changed the center of the educational process to the child after it has been mistakenly placed on the teacher or the textbook. The radiation of the educational theory presented by Dewey and its sparkle has reached the Arab world, where many educators, thinkers and Arab educators found in it the effective recipe that heals the Arabic Educational systems from its chronic diseases.
